Video Journal: Julio Mendez

Julio Mendez is a physics and engineering teacher at Von Steuben Metropolitan Science Center, a Chicago Public School, on Chicago's northwest side. He grew up on Chicago's south side, in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, and teaching is his second career; it found him when he returned to study after a sixteen-year hiatus. He co-coaches the Robotics team, sponsors the Society of Women Engineers SWENext Club, and has worked with the National Science Teaching Association, Smithsonian Science Education Center and ASCD around issues of equity and teacher recruitment and retention. Julio teaches with the intent of making students see themselves as engineers or scientists through building relationships, allowing them to make mistakes, and making everything we do relevant to their lives.
